MARCUS TILLOTSON

Marcus Tillotson was born at Westcombe, Victoria Road, Bolton on November 16th 1915, the second son of Fred and Dorothy Tillotson. He was educated at Charterhouse (L) and Queens College, Oxford. He joined Tillotsons Newspapers in 1937. He served in the Territorials 1939-1946 and was town major at Roubaix and Tourcoing, near Lille at the liberation. In 1946 he rejoined Tillotsons Newspapers and succeeded his father Fred Tillotson as chairman in 1956 until Tillotson & Son Ltd was acquired by St.Regis in 1971 when he retired. He was a councillor of the Newspaper Society and president 1966-1967. He was a member of the Bolton School Committee serving as chairman of the Boys’ Division 1963-1984. Other apponintments included the Board of Management Bolton Y.M.C.A. and chairman of Bolton, Leigh and District Deaf & Dumb Society. He served as a magistrate in Bolton. He married Daphne Marjory Thompson in 1946 and had four children. They lived at Oakwood, Horwich 1946-1951 and moved to Westcombe in 1951. He enjoyed shooting and fishing and played golf until late in life. As a young man he was a good tennis player. He died at Westcombe in 2005.
